I don’t know which homeschoolers love more – books or PJs. I’m guessing it’s books since I know there are homeschoolers who get up and put on actual clothes every day, but I’ve never met a homeschooler who’s said, “Books? No, I think I’ll pass.”

That’s why I am excited to tell you about Epic! Because, books, y’all.

What Is Epic!?

Epic! is the leading digital library for kids 12 and under. Yes, I took that straight from their website, but that is the most succinct way to explain Epic! It’s a digital library of over 25,000 books and educational videos for kids.

The site can be accessed on desktops and laptops and you can download the app to access it on tablets and phones. (You do get a warning on phones saying, “Epic! does not support the current display size setting and may behave unexpectedly,” but I didn’t encounter any issues.)

fiction and non-fiction books for kids

Epic! has a wide selection of audio books in addition to those your child can read for himself (or you can read to him). There are also read-to-me books which read the text aloud while kids follow along on the screen.

There are fiction and non-fiction books. The fiction books include popular titles such as A House for Hermit Crab and Goodnight, Moon for young readers and The Secret Garden and Because of Winn-Dixie for older readers.

There are educational videos on a wide range of topics. Need to learn about tornados? Epic! has got that? What about Tasmanian devils? Yep, they’ve got that, too. What about a solar eclipse? Yes, that, too!

You can also find a variety of quizzes on Epic! The grade level range is listed for each. You can use them before studying a topic to see what your student knows about it (and pick up some ideas for what you may want to cover) or after to see how much he learned.

Your child may also enjoy taking the quizzes to test what they know about a topic. Sometimes learning what they don’t know about something is enough to spark an interest to dig deeper.

Who Is Epic! For?

Epic! is for anyone with kids ages 12 and under – parents, grandparents, teachers, and homeschool families.

It’s great for when you’re traveling to Florida and the 3-year-old is getting antsy. {ahem}

It’s perfect for when you’re studying something and the kids want to go off on a rabbit trail for which you’re unprepared. You don’t have to make an emergency trip to the library or ask your BFF, Google. Epic! has hundreds of non-fiction books, so there is probably one covering the topic you need.

It’s fantastic for people who are learning Chinese or Spanish. I discovered books in both languages on Epic! I am working on learning Spanish (Yes, me! With or without my kids.), so I was excited to find the Spanish books. For both languages, there are read-to-me options, so I was able to hear the language spoken while I followed along. (Okay, I couldn’t really follow along with the Chinese, but I could the Spanish.)

Epic! could be especially useful for families who don’t have easy access to a good public library system. You can access the books, videos, and quizzes on Epic! anywhere you have an internet connection.

What Are the Features of Epic!?
