This week’s Works for Me Wednesday is a themed edition:  share your best cleaning tip.  I don’t have any one super-spectacular cleaning tip, so I’ll just share a few of my favorites:

Microwave.  The easiest way to clean the microwave is also super simple.  Just place a cup of water in the microwave (I’ll often put a splash of lemon juice in the water) and turn it on long enough to bring the water to a boil.  After the microwave goes off, don’t do anything –including open the door — for five minutes.  Then, just take a damp cloth, open the door and wipe down thoroughly.

Bar Keeper’s Friend.  This stuff is awesome!  It works wonders on the tub/shower, but is also gentle enough for our glass top stove.

The van.  I don’t usually purposely keep plastic grocery bags in my van, but, even so, there are usually some in there.  Cleaning out the van — with a bag for stuff that needs to go in the house and another for stuff that needs to be thrown away — makes a great activity for wait times.  You know, like when somebody is in the orthodontist’s office or an outside class.

  1. I do the same thing with cleaning our van. While I'm getting gas or just waiting around on something, I start putting things away, one bag for the trash and one bag to go in and it's all ready to be taken care of when we get home.

  2. Kris – I love the bag cleaning tip. I think I'm going to put enough out there for each of my children to help and work myself right out of a job! Perfect timing on the tip as I was looking at the van just yesterday(seriously!) trying to decide when I would clean out the mess.

    Thanks!

  3. I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

  4. @ Memory Cards — Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

@ Tristan and Monica — It doesn't take long, does it? My kids can trash my van much faster than I can clean it.

  5. Wait…you mean we're supposed to *clean out* the van? I thought all that stuff would eventually just…fade away….

    😛

  6. Love Bar Keeper's Friend! Keeps my sink white. Perfect timing with the microwave cleaning tip as ours needs a good cleaning. Good chore for the oldest dd, lol.

  7. Great tips, especially for the van. Not having anything to put the trash in is one reason I don't clean it out as often as I should.

I like Bar Keepers Friend too! I prefer Zud, but it's impossible to find.

  8. I try to remember to clean out the car every time that I get gas.

Keeping some plastic grocery bags around for the stuff that needs to be brought inside is a great idea!

  9. Oh yes, you just mentionned 2 things that have been big help in my home: bags in the van and vinegar in the microwave. I really can testify to both of these.
