Works for Me Wednesday: Dryer Steam Setting

Have you seen the commercials for those new high-end dryers with the steam setting? You’re supposed to be able to toss an article of clothing or two in the dryer, turn on the steam setting and pull the item out a little later, all refreshed and wrinkle-free.

Ever wish your dryer had one of those settings? It does!

Maybe you recall that I’ve mentioned that I hate ironing. My anti-ironing plan involves pulling clothes out of the dryer as soon as they’re done and hanging them up or folding them. Sometimes, though, I don’t get the clothes out right away or I just need to refresh something. That’s when I use my dryer’s steam setting. Here’s how it works:

1) Wet a washcloth and wring it out really well.

2) Toss the damp washcloth into the dryer with the clothes that need to be refreshed.

3) Turn dryer on for 10-15 minutes.

Voila! It’s a steam setting…even for dryers that are nearly 20 years old, like mine.

  1. My Mom always used to do that, so anytime I have something wrinkly, that's what I do too. Heck — I just did it earlier today. 😉 (My kids didn't even know what an iron was until we started using it for sewing, ironing on embroidery patterns, etc.)

  2. Love using this little trick. It is very handy! 🙂

    p.s. I think it's hysterical that the first post I went to comment on today was one you'd already been too! {Angie's}

  3. Oh cool – makes sense, though I'd have never thought of it.

Ha, I'm weird – I actually *enjoy* ironing most of the time.

  4. Love it! We just bought a new dryer this year and I could not see paying an extra $400 to have the steam setting. Boy, I am glad we didn't knowing how easy it is to do yourself : )

  5. I've been doing this for years. I hate ironing with a passion. I didn't know it was a steam setting though, I just thought I was being lazy.

  6. Oh brilliant.
I don't iron. I spray my clothes with water and lay flat to dry but your idea…oh so much better. 🙂

  7. Nice tip!

I'll have to follow it once I start wearing normal people clothes. Because right now? I'm wearing a pair of ginormous pregnancy capris and an old tee-shirt.

    Shh, don't tell!

  8. Oh Yeah. I've done that before. It works very well for a permanent press load that sat in the dryer overnight too!
