This week’s WFMW is a themed edition for sharing great toy ideas for the upcoming Christmas gift-giving season. Hands down, the most fun gift we were given last year was our Wii. It was from the in-laws to all of us and we have loved it!

Because most of the games (or, at least, the ones we have) require normal movements to play, even outdated moms like me can join in on the fun. To play tennis, you swing the Wii remote like a tennis racket; to bowl, you swing it like a bowling ball. And, with up to four remotes, almost the whole family can play.

Another great part about the Wii is that many games actually require the player to move. Although my husband has perfected the “bowling from the chair” technique, I have to stand and move like I’m really bowling to play. I even saw several pieces on CNN, when the Wii first came out, about nursing homes putting the games into their common rooms for the residents to play — and the residents were loving it!

I know the Wii is a bit pricey and there is a lot of negativity concerning video games, but this has been one of the best gifts we’ve ever had. It gives us something to do together as a family that everyone can enjoy…and it hasn’t become something to be discarded to the donation bin, nor does it have a million little pieces that I have to nag my kids to pick up.

So, I highly recommend the Wii…and you might as well get the Rock Band bundle to go with it. 😉

  1. I’m at a loss over what to get the kids for Channukah. They don’t have any great wishes. We bought them a “just because” gift today that probably should have waited for Channukah. They got Lazer Tag guns. the kids at park day have them and there is always a huge game going on.

last year we bought a bunch of construction toys that get played with each day. they have enough art supplies to start an art studio.

we don’t have a tv set large enough for a Wii. we have one tiny portable in the master bedroom that hardly ever gets switched on. We’ve been debating buying a TV set for the living room but I’m not that keen.

i highly recommend legos and Zoobs. those are the toys that get the most action in our home.

  2. I just discovered the wii at a friend’s house… I think this may have to be this year’s big Christmas present!

  3. We bought the Wii last year, and the whole family loves it. Rock Band is a favorate game in our house – and loving those 80’s tunes on it!!
    😉
