Last Friday, I had the kids write a paragraph about Easter. I didn’t really give them specific instructions; I just suggested that they write their favorite thing about Easter.

Josh finished first and, as I mentioned, spelling aside, he impressed me with the way he put his thoughts on paper:

Most people might think that Easter is just for hunting Easter eggs, but people that are Christians will know the real reason. Easter is really because Jesus died for our sins. So when you are hunting Easter eggs remember the real reason.

Megan shared her thoughts:

My favorite thing about Easter is hunting eggs, spending time with my family, getting candy, getting money in the eggs, and seeing friends. Easter is one of my favorite holidays. My mom and dad leave things on the table for me and my brother and sister.

That’s it. She was done until she and Josh decided they would read their papers to each other. Josh went first. Megan decided to add one more sentence to her paragraph:

It is also about God and Jesus.

Easter[4]

Yes, it is also about God and Jesus.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. – Romans 5:8

Happy Easter from my family to yours. As you’re enjoying dinner with family, hunting Easter eggs, and consuming copious amounts of chocolate, remember the real reason.

  1. We tend to have similar experiences here for Eater and Christmas. Bless their hearts, they try so hard to remember through the excitement. Happy Easter.

  2. Josh's paragraph brought a huge smile to my face. As an English nerd and a Christian, it was wonderful to read such an eloquent paragraph that addressed matters of faith so clearly. Bravo, Josh!

  3. This post made me smile. I was having my own little crisis feeling like "scrooge" for feeling sick at the huge deal all the flowers, candy and eggs seem to be. Not that those things are BAD, but this year it really hit me that it's all so pointless and completely overshadows the real reason. (Maybe I should just refrain from shopping before the next holiday and then I don't need to see the excess!)
