It’s amazing the difference 24 hours can make.  Monday I talked about how complacent I’ve been feeling.  Yesterday, I answered an email from a reader — a reader who described feeling exactly how I felt this time a year ago.  She described the thought of getting started on this journey feeling a bit like stepping off a cliff and having everyone tell you that you just have to take the first step…you know, off the cliff.  Because that’s such an easy thing to do.

That was me this time one year ago.  It was the Monday before Thanksgiving last year that I made the very reluctant decision to begin this journey.  I began with no hopes, no expectations, and no real sense of commitment.  It was more like, “Fine.  You want to start this just so you can fail again?  Fine.  Go ahead.  See where it gets you.

By the end of that first week, though, my enthusiasm, desire and commitment had caught up with my actions.  Here I sit, 64 pounds lighter, wondering why I didn’t just start sooner.

In the course of our emails back and forth yesterday, I told this sweet reader that if she would commit to making one change this week, I would counter that with a commitment of my own.  She did and I did.  My commitment was to add strength training back into my daily workout routine, something I haven’t done in a couple of months.

After dinner, I was telling Brian about the emails shared between my new accountability partner and I.  Somehow, during the conversation, I got really excited.  Excited about working out, counting calories, and getting back in the game.  By the time all was said and done, I had my bodybugg back out — my subscription to the online site expired back in August, which is, not coincidentally, about the time I quit losing.  I charged it and renewed my online subscription.  (My custom foods and settings were still there!  Yay!)

Then, I went and walked 3.5 miles while watching The Biggest Loser.  I followed that with a strength training workout.  I’m excited!  I’m back in this thing!

Anybody want to recommit and join in with a little accountability?  Yeah, I know next week is Thanksgiving?  So what!  There’s nothing like a good challenge.

  1. Oh my gosh ~ you are the second blog I've seen this week about recomitting ourselves. I have to admit, I've slacked off recently (ahem, today was the first timein 10 days since I've been to the gym!) YIKES! I'm totally in this with you. In fact, I plan to write a whole blog post about getting back on the saddle this afternoon.
So, here is my comittment ~ Between now and Thanksgiving I will count EVERY. SINGLE. CALORIE. that I put in my mouth. I'll continue through Turkey Day as well, but for now I'm taking it one week at a time. I have a 32 oz nalgene water bottle and I also vow to fill it up (and drink it) at least four times per day. Indefinitely.

  4. I suppose I am recommitting. Or maybe just reaffirming my previous commitment, since I never actually quit? Whatever. LOL. I'm still on my journey! I could probably use some real accountability myself. My partner dropped out, so I've been on my own for several months. 🙁
