Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! Have you had an amazing week? I certainly hope so! As I sit here typing this, I can hear my boy practicing guitar in his room – because, you know, it’s kind of hard not to hear somebody practicing an electric guitar using an amp – and it just makes me smile. I love that God gifted him with such an entertaining talent.

Sunday morning we got a little bit of an earlier start so that Josh could drive us to church (on the back roads instead of the Interstate, as usual) in the new car. He was so excited. He’s really a good driver. I was able to relax enough in the backseat to play Words with Friends.

Josh Driving

After church, the kids usually ride with one of their friends who drives and we all head to Zaxby’s for lunch. This Sunday, Josh wanted to drive us. I’m so happy to have a car that he can drive so that getting in driving practice isn’t so nerve-wracking for me.

He had been driving Brian’s car, which made me nervous because it’s a straight shift and I knew how bad it would be for Brian (and, subsequently, Josh) if they had an accident, or Brianna’s, but she’s usually gone in hers, so he wasn’t getting in much practice.

You notice my car got left off that list, right? Um, yeah. I’m kind of stingy with it. Josh doesn’t care now, though. This Wednesday was the first time since last Thursday that I got to drive my car. Josh has been driving us around every chance he gets.

After some inspiration from Angie, at Real Life at Home, I got Brian to rig up a desk for me to use while I walk on my treadmill. If I use it like I hope I will, he’s going to work on something more permanent. Well, it won’t be permanent, but right now, he’s using clamps to attach it to the handles. If I like it, he’ll build sides for it, so that it will sit on the treadmill handles without me having to worry about it falling off.

treadmill desk

I walked about 3 miles on the treadmill with it on Tuesday. I’d like to do that 3 or 4 days each week.

Wednesday Megan talked me into taking her out dress-shopping for Easter. What’s particularly amusing about that is 1) Megan rarely wears dresses and 2) we go to a very casual church where hardly anyone wears dresses. We can usually tell who the visitors are by how they’re dressed (dressed up = visitors).

However, she’s cute and persistent and we have a wedding to go to in May, so I figured why not. She found two. One really looks like her because it’s black and simple (with a super-cute back), but the other one, a coral color, was so pretty on her.

We met up with her BFF who had just gotten her braces off. {happy dance} Her friend and Brianna went shopping with us. While we were  out, I picked up a new office chair to replace my 7-year-old, raggedy, decrepit-looking chair. It was comfy, so I could ignore the fact that all the fake leather was peeling off until something in the seat broke and poked me in the leg every time I sat down.

My new chair is equally comfy, a bit smaller (which is a good thing for the space it’s in) and looks so much better. It’s the little things in life, y’all.

mirror image

Nope, that’s not a mirror. That’s the big boy wanting out and the little boy wanting in – which they do about two dozen times a day. And, if it’s not one of them, it’s Chloe. I’ve told the kids if we installed a kitty door, it would fall off its hinges the first week.

And under the heading “things that only a blogger would get excited about,” I got a new watermark made for my images. See it on the images on this post? Exciting stuff, y’all. If you need any kind of graphic work done, I highly recommend Sharon Hujik. She’s reliable, quick to respond, talented, and a homeschool mom.

In case you missed it at About.com this week, I shared 9 Ways to Let Your Kids Take Charge of Their Homeschool Day. Homeschoolers tend to be a fiercely independent lot who guard their freedom closely. Let your kids enjoy some of those freedoms with regards to their school day.

Finally, something interesting to share about school! Because they’re both studying world history in their respective history workbooks this year, Josh and Megan are both learning about Ancient Greece right now. I love studying Greece and Greek mythology fascinates me.

I gave them their choice of books to read for the next few weeks. Josh chose The Tale of Troy. Megan initially chose that one too until I commented that I was surprised she didn’t choose The Tales of the Greek Heroes. I told her that I thought she’d like all the myths and it would probably make the Percy Jackson movies more interesting to her.

She decided to read it instead and a couple of days later, I went to her room to find the Percy Jackson movies spread out on her bed. I may or may not have said I told you so, but she didn’t care. She’s as fascinated by the tales as I always was and has been telling me about some of her favorites.

Now it’s off for a somewhat busy Easter weekend of church services and family dinners. Happy Easter, y’all!
