Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you all had a fantastic week and that everyone who was in the path of Hurricane Matthew weathered the storm okay. The only change in weather we experienced from it was windier conditions. While that was obviously mild compared to what others experienced, it didn’t help the many wildfires that are burning in the area due to the dry conditions.

It has been much more fall-like here for a change. The days are still very pleasant with temperatures in the 70’s and even some 80’s here and there, with 50’s at night. Those are really great temperatures for sleeping with the windows open, which I love to do.

For some reason, the Chemistry 101 DVD decided to quit working on Josh’s laptop, so he’s been watching it on mine. No wonder he doesn’t complain about the course! I got interested in it last week since I was working in the kitchen while he watched it in the dining room.

The subject was x-rays and radium and the instructor was talking about the Radium Girls. They were female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch dials with self-luminous paint. The women had been told the paint was harmless. They would lick their paintbrushes to give them a fine point.

Because they liked the way it glowed, they painted their fingernails, eyelids, teeth and buttons with the paint. I told Josh if something like that happened today, there would be commercials on TV, “If you or someone you know contracted radiation poisoning or died after working in a radium factory, you may be entitled to compensation. Contact the law offices of…”

We’ve been playing with the USA and U.S. history maps from Pin-It Maps. (Did you see the giveaway?) We really love all their maps. They are so versatile and so much more fun than just labeling a map in a book.

I treated myself to a pair of noise-cancelling headphones this week. I’ve been thinking about them for awhile. I don’t need them often, but those times when I’m trying to work and all manner of chaos is going on in the house (TV, video games, teenagers with no volume control), I really wish I had them.

Costco had a decent price on them, so I decided to try them, thinking that I’d return them if they didn’t work like I hoped. I already love them! I was working at Chick-Fil-A on Wednesday while Megan was at her photography class and I felt like I was in my own little world once I put them on and turned Coffitivity on. I love that site!

That’s it for me this week. I’m off to enjoy the weekend – and I won’t even complain if we get that rain for which there is a teeny tiny chance in the forecast.

  1. My dh LOVES his Bose noise cancelling headphones. It’s made air travel so much better for him- the noise of the engines used to drive him crazy.

  2. Headphones are my lifesaver. I stash cheap pairs everywhere – my desk, handbag, bedside & car. I usually use the white noise app BrainWave. Not sure if it’s the placebo effect but I love deciding if I want to be ‘creative’ or to ‘quietly concentrate’ etc (my son was disappointed he didn’t have ‘lucid dreams’ after one listen). I hadn’t come across Coffivity – definitely checking those sounds out. Have a great weekend, Kris!
