It’s time to celebrate those NSV’s — you know, non-scale victories. Did you resist a temptation? Notice that your jeans weren’t as snug? Exercise consistently? We know that weight-loss successes don’t occur only on the scale. Let’s celebrate them!

Scale-less Saturday

First of all, I want to say thank you to some very special readers.  I think you’re all pretty awesome and the support and encouragement that you provide is invaluable.  However, I know that there are a few of you who are here simply to encourage me.  You don’t have weight issues of your own, but you stop by, keep up with how I’m doing, and leave encouraging comments.  I wanted you to know that your support most definitely does not go unnoticed.  It means a lot to me.  Thank you.

I had a few NSV that stand out in my mind this week.  The first two occurred Tuesday night.  We’ve been trying a lot of new foods, most of which my kids have enjoyed.  Some of the things they’ve enjoyed have been a total surprise to them, like the baked zucchini sticks.  I fixed broiled tilapia on Tuesday night, along with roasted red potatoes and spinach (which, surprisingly, both the girls and I love and have from childhood…we ate two cans between the three of us.).  Brianna was pleasantly surprised by how much she liked the tilapia.  That made me feel really good to see that she’s finding some healthy alternatives that she really enjoys.

Later that evening, I was walking on the treadmill while watching The Biggest Loser grand finale (which we loved!).  Josh was in the basement with me and, without saying anything, he hopped on the recumbent bike and rode for awhile — not long and not terribly fast, but it was an encouragement to me to see him taking the initiative to put a little activity into an otherwise sedentary activity.

Both of these two things made me realize what an influence I am to my kids.  It’s very nice to see that the positive changes I am making in my life are beginning to positively influence them.  I am excited to see them beginning to make better choices on their own, with no nagging from me.  That’s the only way that the changes will be lifestyle changes for them.  Very, very encouraging.

The final thing occurred yesterday, when I was able to get into a pair of jeans that I haven’t been able to wear in awhile!  That’s exciting!  And, to answer my daughter’s question, yes, I was able to breathe.  😉

So, what about you?  What exciting NSV did you experience this week?

  1. Yay! So glad you were able to fit into the jeans. Also, what a great reminder to me on how much of an influence I have on my girls. Even the little things. I know you are going to make it.. keep up the good work.

  2. Sometimes we completely ignore or don't notice the NSV because we don't even look for them and then feel like a failure because "I have been dieting for weeks and nothing has changed."
So I really love the idea of making a conscious effort to notice them.

While I haven't noticed a huge scale difference I have noticed my wedding ring is spinning around on my finger because I am not nearly as puffy as I was. Ok, I should rephrase that, I have lost 6 lbs but those 6 lbs should not make the difference in how my rings fit. 20-30 lbs should make my rings much looser but not 6.

In any case that tells me that this diet is the better choice for me.

Also, I saw your tweet about eting an orange and wanted to tell you if you have a Sams membership, they have clementines ("cuties") that are the best oranges ever. Other places have clementines but the ones we got from walmart were bland – they weren't "cuties."

Also try other variety of apples. In my opinion, red delicious apples are only good for decoration and should not be eaten. But I dearly love pink lady apples, or fuji or braeburn. Gala will do, Granny Smith is great for cooking but a bit too tart for me on eating. My point is, try the other apple varieties. If you think you don't like apples, it is probably because of the red delicious (which aren't. Red flavorless, Red grainy, Red mealy but not red delicious).
